Adam McKay Speaks On Ending His Partnership With Will Ferrell – Exclusive

Will Ferrell and Adam McKay

For comedy fans, the news that Adam McKay and Will Ferrell are folding their production company Gary Sanchez Productions hit like some kind of Hollywood divorce – the beloved partnership behind Step Brothers, The Other Guys, and Eastbound & Down, among others, sadly coming to an end. But the truth of it is, there was no falling out, no fundamental disagreement – just an amicable parting of the ways. McKay speaks about the company’s end for the first time in the new issue of Empire. “We both felt it had got pretty big and it was time to start up anew,” he explains in the summer issue. “It’s the best time.”

After meeting on SNL, Ferrell and McKay collaborated on the likes of Anchorman and Talladega Nights, going on to establish Gary Sanchez Productions in 2006 – though in recent years, McKay has moved into different filmmaking territory with the likes of The Big Short and Vice, neither of which starred Ferrell. But despite the wrapping up of Gary Sanchez, McKay says this isn’t the end of him and Ferrell working together. “We have an idea we’re kicking around right now which we’d love to do,” he teased. “If he and I didn’t work together, that would be heartbreaking. We’re going to do everything we can to make sure that’s not the case.”

Step Brothers

Will the pair’s first post-Sanchez collaboration will be more in the vein of McKay’s recent works, telling politically-focused Oscar-friendly stories with comedic energy and visual pazzazz? Or could it see the return of the gloriously dumb character comedy the pair have perfected over the years? To be quite honest, we’d happily take either.
