Anne Hathaway Lines Up The Fiance

Anne Hathaway is set to star in The Fiance, a new romantic comedy, to be directed by Burr Steers.

The movie will revolve around Hathaway’s bride-to-be, who postpones her wedding to her seemingly perfect fiancé so she can figure out who she is and what she wants from life. But her parents begin to meddle in her affairs, making it impossible for her to move on.

And we’re willing to bet that along the way she’ll find out that her fiancé isn’t so perfect after all, and that she might run into another guy worthy of her affections.

If it all sounds a bit formulaic, well, we’re encouraged by the presence of Steers in the director’s chair – he directed the non-formula Igby Goes Down, and has the time-travel rom-com 17 Again in the can – and by Etan Cohen’s involvement as screenwriter.

Cohen, of course, was one of the writers on Tropic Thunder and has just handed in his script for the Will Ferrell-Sacha Baron Cohen take on Sherlock Holmes. So The Fiance might pack a little more edge than your average rom-com.

As for Hathaway, we’d pay to see her in just about anything, but with this and the forthcoming Bride Wars, she does seem to be leaning towards romantic comedy. And why not – after all, in the race to become America’s Sweetheart, it didn’t do Meg Ryan or Julia Roberts any harm.

The Fiance was originally set up at Disney, but they passed, allowing Warner Bros. to swoop in and save the day. Producers Adam Shankman and Jennifer Gibgot are looking to start filming in March, after which it looks likely that Hathaway will move on to Get Smart 2. She’s currently working on Tim Burton’s Alice In Wonderland.
