Who’s ready to tumble head-first into the Quantum Realm once more? Peyton Reed, Paul Rudd, and Evangeline Lilly, that’s who! The Ant-Man team has reunited for Marvel’s third film about the size-shifting superhero, this time with the amusingly kitschy title Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania – and director Reed, who also brought the previous Ant-Man films to the screen, has just confirmed that the threequel has begun shooting. He didn’t share a pic of the cast, though – no, instead he posted a snap of Cassie Lang’s terrifying bunny birthday present from the first film, alongside a sinister ‘biohazard’ tube.
Is it just a fun photo to kick things off? Or is there something to read into here, focusing on Cassie’s childhood toy? While the first two Ant-Man films have been fun, family-friendly romps (Ant-Man And The Wasp in particular was a palette-cleanser post-Infinity War), in Endgame Rudd’s Scott Lang emerged from the Quantum Realm post-Snap to discover that his beloved daughter had grown up by five years since he’d been gone. That’s an emotional blow which could add some dramatic meat to the third film, having missed out on even more years of Cassie’s life.
The teenage Cassie will be played in Quantumania by Freaky’s excellent Kathryn Newton, and not by Endgame’s Emma Fuhrmann, with Michael Douglas and Michelle Pfeiffer returning as Hank Pym and Janet van Dyne. The most notable other cast member currently known? Jonathan Majors, expected to make his debut proper here as Kang The Conqueror – having (LOKI SPOILER ALERT) already popped up in the season finale ofLoki as Kang’s more amiable variant He Who Remains. Other than that, we know little about the sequel – just that it’s been written by Rick And Morty veteran Jeff Loveness, so expect some heady, timey-wimey, quantum-leaping, post-Multiverse sci-fi shenanigans in there.
Quantumania is shooting now in the UK, and is expected to hit the big screen in February 2023.
