It’s been a long time since we’ve heard anything on the Artemis Fowl front. Disney’s adaptation of the hit YA book series by Eoin Colfer was initially down for a summer release last year, before being pushed back by a year – and with its new release date now looming, we have a new trailer. This one shows off plenty more from Kenneth Branagh’s adaptation, and a major piece of casting – Colin Farrell as the titular character’s father. Watch the first new trailer in well over a year here.
There’s a lot of new material to see here – fresh looks at Josh Gad as fan-favourite character Mulch Diggums (a kleptomaniac dwarf who tunnels under the grown), a whacking great troll, and LEPrecon fairy police officer Holly Short. It also shows a significantly different way into the story and world compared to the original book – one which might prove controversial to fans hoping for a faithful adaptation. Where the first book introduced Artemis as a cold and cunning pint-sized criminal genius who kidnaps and exploits a fairy for a gold ransom, this trailer frontloads a plot in which Artemis’ father has been captured, meaning the boy – here more wide-eyed and friendly – has to rescue him, and learns about the fairy world along the way.

We’ll find out exactly how the film interprets the source material when Artemis Fowl hits UK cinemas on 29 May.
