The Carol Corps really turned up at the box office for Captain Marvel – the latest entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has now pulled in over $1 billion at the worldwide box office, making it Marvel Studios’ seventh most successful theatrical release. The film’s updated tally comes in at $1,002,651,774 – with roughly $358 million of that coming from the US, and $644 million from international audiences.

If Captain Marvel hopes to surpass Captain America: Civil War, currently in sixth place, it will have to earn an extra $150 million – a considerable extra haul. However, it’s still the second most lucrative origin story film in the MCU, behind only Black Panther. The studio’s biggest smash remains Avengers: Infinity War which earned over $2 billion at the box office alone – and early tracking suggests Avengers: Endgame could surpass that when it arrives in three weeks.

And of course, anyone who goes to see Endgame on the big screen – which, let’s face it, will be nearly everyone – will be seeing more of Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers very soon. As confirmed by the recent Endgame trailers (and SPOILER WARNING the mid-credits scene in Captain Marvel END SPOILERS), she’ll be joining the Avengers in the fight against Thanos in the Infinity War sequel after being summoned back to Earth by a crumbling Nick Fury. Beyond Endgame, Carol Danvers will surely return in a string of sequels – as Marvel prepares to say goodbye to some of its beloved star players, it will be reliant on the likes of Captain Marvel, Black Panther, and Doctor Strange to take the MCU through to Phase 4 and beyond.
