Set pagers to stun – the first trailer for Captain Marvel has landed, teasing the introduction of Carol Danvers into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film is Marvel’s first female solo headline title, casting Brie Larson as a former fighter pilot who finds herself imbued with powerful new cosmic abilities, and gets embroiled in an intergalactic war between enemy races the Kree and the Skrulls. As you do. We know you’ll be itching to watch the trailer, so here it is without further ado:

For this instalment, the MCU is heading back to the 1990s – hence that Blockbuster Video shot – and brings back the likes of Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury and Clark Gregg’s Agent Coulson with that nifty de-ageing technology. Fury even has both of his eyes, for now. As for the plot, there are a few intriguing strands here – Danvers' life on Earth and her time as part of the space-bound Starforce can both be seen, though it seems the character's own recollection of her origins aren't exactly clear. What we do know is that Captain Marvel punches an old lady – presumably an evil shape-shifting Skrull, and not just a pensioner who rubs our hero up the wrong way.

Elsewhere in the film, Ben Mendelsohn is Skrull baddie Talos, who you can briefly see covered in green make-up, Lashana Lynch plays Danvers’ Air Force buddy Maria Rambeau, and Gemma Chan is Kree sniper Minn-Erva. Then there’s Jude Law as Danvers’ intergalactic mentor Mar-Vell, commander of Starforce.

Captain Marvel

Not only does Captain Marvel’s arrival illuminate an exciting new corner of the MCU, but she’s set to be a pivotal presence in the series moving forward. AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR SPOILERS FOLLOW. In the post-credits sting of Avengers: Infinity War, Nick Fury and Maria Hill were scattered to the winds by Thanos’ finger-snapping attack. But just before he turned to dust, Fury sent a pager message to Carol Danvers, presumably to summon her back to Earth and help sort everything out in Avengers 4.

Captain Marvel, directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, is due to land in UK cinemas on 8 March 2019 – just two months before Avengers 4 wraps up Phase Three of the MCU. Bring it on.
