Even though it’s less than two years since Andy Muschietti’s It gave us a hugely satisfying new adaptation of Stephen King’s iconic horror novel – or at least half of one – it feels more like 27. But after that long wait, the first trailer for It: Chapter Two is here, teasing a terrifying return to Derry, Maine, and more petrifying exploits from Pennywise the Dancing Clown. Taking in the portions of King’s novel starring the Losers’ Club as grown-ups (the two timelines are weaved together on the page), this second part finds the adult incarnations facing up to the fact that the demonic entity has returned to cause more havoc nearly three decades later. This is our first proper look at the new cast of the film in action, with James McAvoy taking over as lead Bill Denbrough, Jessica Chastain playing Bev Marsh, Bill Hader wrapping his mouth around the rapid-fire dialogue of Richie Tozer, Jay Ryan playing the now-buffed up Ben Hanscom, James Ransone taking on Eddie Kaspbrak, Andy Bean playing Stanley Uris, and Isaiah Mustafah stepping into the shoes of Mike Hanlon. And don’t worry, the young cast is back too – including the likes of Finn Wolfhard, Jaeden Martell (formerly Lieberher), Sophia Lillis, and Jack Dylan Grazer.
Hopes are high for the second leg of Muschietti’s adaptation – this second timeline allows for exploration of the novel’s themes around lingering trauma, the manifestation of childhood fears and their ripples through adulthood, and the devastation of grief. Oh, and really scary clowns.
Prepare to float once again when It: Chapter 2 hits cinemas on 6 September.
