After making his way through Robin Hood, Camelot and now the US drama Vikings, Clive Standen is slowly inching his way towards the present day in his high profile projects. He’s landed a part in Baltasar Kormakur’s **Everest.

Standen joins a stalwart cast that already includes Josh Brolin, John Hawkes, Jason Clarke and Jake Gyllenhaal in the harrowing true story of an attempt on the foreboding mountain in 1996 that left eight climbers dead.

The new film chronicles the version of events made famous by Jon Krakauer's book Into Thin Air (already filmed as a TV movie with Christopher McDonald as Krakauer), in which three separate Everest expeditions ran into tragic difficulties in a sudden storm. The script, from William Nicholson and Justin Isbell, however, will also be drawn from supplementary sources including other books and new interviews with the survivors.

Given how quickly the cast is filling up, it appears Kormakur is on track to get his Everest project going before Doug Liman can leave basecamp on his competing film, which chronicles George Mallory’s ill-fated assault on the peak in 1924.
