Big broadway successes have had a hit-or-miss trip to screens – there are the likes of Chicago on one end of the spectrum and then there's, er, Cats. Hoping to be much closer to the Oscar-winning former entry is Dear Evan Hansen, which now has its first trailer online.

Ben Platt, who originated the title role on stage is back for one final performance as Hansen, a high schooler with social anxiety who writes letters to try to help himself. He unintentionally gets caught up in a lie after the family of Connor (Colton Ryan), a classmate who took his own life, mistakes one of Hansen’s letters for their son’s suicide note.

As Evan becomes ever more deeply involved with Connor's family – especially Zoe (Kaitlyn Dever), the lad's sister on whom Evan has a crush – it becomes further complicated.

Directed by Wonder's Stephen Chbosky, the film boats a script by Steven Levenson and, crucially, music from the stage version's contributors Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, who scored an Oscar for La La Land's tunes.

With Amy Adams, Julianne Moore, Amandla Stenberg and Danny Pino also in the cast, Dear Evan Hansen will be out in the UK in on 22 October.
