Long before this year’s Shazam! movie arrived in cinemas, there’s been talk of a Black Adam film. The character is the equal-and-opposite to Billy Batson’s alter-ego – the Venom to his Spider-Man – and it’s a role that Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson has long been associated with, having spoken about his love for the character. And now after the success of Shazam!, it sounds like Black Adam is firmly a go with Johnson to star – with the actor tweeting an update on the project.
“This project has been with me for over 10yrs,” he wrote. “Production begins this July. Appreciate the support.” Currently linked with Black Adam is The Shallows filmmaker Jaume Collet-Serra, who also directed Johnson’s upcoming Disney action-adventure Jungle Cruise – and considering Black Adam and Shazam often share the page in DC Comics, it’s expected that the pair could clash in an upcoming movie. For now DC/Warner hasn’t confirmed any future Shazam plans, but the film grossed a respectable $364.5 million worldwide from a fairly limited $100 million budget.
If the film does indeed shoot in July 2020, expect a release date any time from summer 2021 – and stay tuned for more updates (possibly from Johnson’s social media accounts) as they come.
