With his impeccable track record, from the Cornetto trilogy to Scott Pilgrim vs. The World and Baby Driver, the arrival of a new Edgar Wright film is something to be very excited about – and the filmmaker has just gone into production on his seventh big-screen outing (if you include his early debut A Fistful Of Fingers). It’s called Last Night In Soho, and it sees the director more into psychological horror territory. Wright recently confirmed that cameras are rolling, sharing a shot of the clapperboard.
The shot reveals that Wright’s cinematographer on this one is Chung-hoon Chung – a regular collaborator of Park Chan-Wook, who shot Oldboy, Thirst, Stoker, and The Handmaiden with the Korean auteur, among others. Wright co-wrote the film with Krysty Wilson-Cairns, and the project’s cast is led by modern-day scream queen Anya Taylor-Joy – joined on screen by the likes of Matt Smith and Leave No Trace’s Thomasin McKenzie. That’s one hell of a team. Film4, who are co-producing the film with Focus Features and Working Title, also revealed the film’s suitably neon logo – a fitting match for the aesthetics of London’s Soho.
Speaking to Empire earlier this year, Wright teased his intention to make Last Night In Soho, returning to home soil after the Atlanta, Georgia setting of Baby Driver. “I realised I had never made a film about central London – specifically Soho, somewhere I’ve spent a huge amount of time in the last 25 years,” he explained. “With Hot Fuzz and Shaun Of The Dead you make movies about places you’ve lived in. This movie is about the London I’ve existed in.” Wright also listed Don’t Look Now and Repulsion as influences on this one.
There’s no confirmed release slot for Last Night In Soho yet – but rest assured, a new Edgar Wright film is about to enter your life.
