That a sequel to Edge Of Tomorrow (or as it ended up named for some home entertainment releases, Live Die Repeat: Edge Of Tomorrow) is in development is hardly news, as we've known that director Doug Liman has been trying to crack the concept for a while. Now, though, Deadline brings word that Warner Bros. is giving someone else a crack at the script, as The Invention Of Lying's Matthew Robinson is on board.
The first film found Tom Cruise as combat-allergic public relations officer disgraced and thrown into battle against alien forces by his commanding officers. He finds himself trapped in a time loop, dying in various ways until he meets tough special forces soldier Emily Blunt, and learns how to fight. Putting knowledge from his repetitive deaths into practice, he hatches a plan to defeat the extraterrestrials.
Right now, Cruise and Blunt are holding off on signing official deals to return until they and Liman are all happy with the script and we'd be shocked – shocked, we tell you! – if Christopher McQuarrie didn't take a pass at some point, assuming he has time given his Mission: Impossible duties. Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse worked on the script with McQuarrie previously, but it didn't work out.
When the new movie might be ready to shoot is anyone's guess (and Cruise will also be busy as Ethan Hunt for a while), but at least this one is still showings signs of life.
