Like the undead creatures he often made movies about, zombie movie godfather George A. Romeo's work keeps coming back to life even after the man himself has passed away. Suzanne Romero, his wife, has quietly been working on Twilight Of The Dead, looking to finish the film he never got to make.
Romero died of lung cancer in 2017, but before he passed he had been developing Twilight, which he intended to be his concluding statement on the genre. He'd written a treatment with Paolo Zelati, who asked Suzanne Romero for permission to continue with the script. She agreed, and they brought Joe Knetter and Robert L. Lucas on to help.
"I gave him my full blessing as long as I could be there every step of the way for it to remain true to George’s vision," Romeo tells The Hollywood Reporter. "We had a solid treatment and the beginning of the script. I can 100 percent say that George would be incredibly happy to see this continue. He wanted this to be his final stamp on the zombie genre."
As you might expect, the story is typically post-apocalyptic: set in a decimated world where life has all but disappeared. But there still may be hope for humanity... It's intended to answer the question of where the zombies go after Land Of The Dead – while he did make Diary Of The Dead and Survival Of The Dead, he never considered those as fully fitting into the Night Of The Living Dead story.
Suzanne Romero is now looking for a director to tackle the film. "This is the film he wanted to make. And while someone else will carry the torch as the director, it is very much a George A. Romero film," she says. Now we wait to see what actually emerges.
