Glass Tops The US Box Office

Martin Luther King, Jr. weekend is a federal holiday across the pond, which means lots of people have the Monday off and there are extra chances for movies to pick up ticket proceeds and eyeballs. For the long weekend, it was Glass that scored the top spot, earning $47 million across four days.

Despite that apparent success, M. Night Shyamalan's long-awaited follow-up to Unbreakable and slightly less long (but no less anticipated) sequel to Split still emerged as something of a disappointment in terms of earnings, falling a hair below expectations. Still, with a $20 million budget and more than $95 million worldwide after a few days on release, it's hardly a flop.

Glass pushed The Upside down to second place, where it made $18.3 million in the four days. Aquaman has now spent five weeks in the charts and it's still swimming strong, dropping to third on $12.5 million.

Yet perhaps a bigger story than the arrival from Shyamalan's latest was the surprise success of an anime title. Dragon Ball Super: Broly was released on just 1,236 screens compared to Glass' nearly 4,000 and it still earned $11.4 million for the three-day weekend and nearly $22 million total. Not bad for a movie that enjoyed little mainstream promotion.

Fifth was Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, fresh from a brace of awards this weekend and looking like a potential surprise Oscar winner. It earned $9.7 million while A Dog's Way Home fell to sixth on $9.6 million and Escape Room was pushed to seventh, where it made $6.75 million.

Mary Poppins Returns bobbed down another couple of spots to eighth, adding $6.73 million, ahead of Bumblebee, which earned $5.8 million. Finally, at 10th On The Basis Of Sex took in $4.6 million.
