Following the announcement of Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire director Adam Wingard's shock exit from the MonsterVerse last month, Legendary has found itself a new director to helm the sequel to their latest box-office behemoth. As reported by THR, I Am Mother director Grant Sputore has been tapped to steer the Kaiju franchise's next Titan team-up, which is being written by Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings and Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse scribe Dave Callaham.

Precious little is known about the future instalment in Legendary's MonsterVerse series, though it is being described as a direct continuation of the franchise, built around Godzilla, Kong, and various other Titans. Before Wingard's departure from the project, the director had teased that a third Godzilla x Kong collab would likely see our beloved irradiated lizard take centre stage, with the tantalising prospect of an appearance from legendary Kaiju Destoroyah having even been floated by the filmmaker. Whether that's the route Sputore — whose Hilary Swank- and Rose Byrne-starring directorial debut I Am Mother demonstrated the filmmaker's nous for mixing human drama with eye-catching sci-fi — will follow Wingard's gameplan remains to be seen.

With Godzilla Minus One roaring its way onto Netflix this week following its remarkable recent Oscar success, a sequel to that film potentially on its way, and Legendary throwing fans a curveball with their choice of director for the next MonsterVerse movie, it's a good time to be a Kaiju stan. We'll bring you more on Godzilla X Kong's sequel just as soon as we get it, but in the meantime we're going to go and watch Minus One again. And if you haven't seen it already, what are you still doing here? Go! It's amazing!
