Golden Globes Film Awards 2021: Nomadland, Borat And More Score Trophies

Nomadland, Borat: Subsequent Moviefilm

The 2021 Golden Globes ceremony was always going to be a weird affair, not the least because it had to be one of those hybrid virtual affairs, with segments pre-recorded, Zoom speeches and trophies handed out in the coming weeks after a thorough sanitizing.

This year, though they also took place under a cloud of controversy and – for some, revelation – as the boy behind the awards, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, faced accusations of closed ranks, financial impropriety, and a distinct lack of inclusivity, since it includes no black members. Social media campaigns calling for change have been rampant in the last week, and the choices in some categories, such as Emily In Paris being nominated where the likes of I May Destroy You were shunned.

Hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler – presenting from different coasts of the States (Fey at the Rainbow Room in New York, Poehler at the ceremony's usual venue, the Beverly Hilton in LA) – doled out the usual jokes, with a few choice barbs about the average age of HFPA members ("some of them may be ghosts"), celebs (Quentin Tarantino's er... appreciation... of feet got a shout-out) and the inclusivity issue. The Association also rolled out members to promise more diversity in future – though they might have been better off showing someone repairing a stable door after a horse has already bolted. And the stable is on fire.

On the movie front, the choices were naturally more limited than they might have been, given the lack of big releases, though companies such as Amazon and Netflix stepped into the breach.

As for the ceremony itself, there were plenty of technical glitches (yes, you did Daniel Kaluuya dirty) and awkward moments. There were movies we'd expected to win more that went home empty-handed (looking at One Night In Miami). But there were also funny moments (Barb! Star! And some courtesy of nominee Don Cheadle) and one emotional, truthful heart-punch, as the late Chadwick Boseman's wife, Taylor Simone Ledward accepted his award for Ma Rainey's Black Bottom on his behalf.
