As the Marvel Cinematic Universe approaches the releases of Captain Marvel and the upcoming Avengers: Endgame, we’re coming to the end of the currently-announced Marvel slate. And once Spider-Man: Far From Home arrives in late summer, the only subsequent film we know is officially in the works is Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3. However, the sequel was delayed after filmmaker James Gunn’s ousting from the MCU over offensive joke Tweets, and a new director is yet to be announced for the project. Now one of its stars – and the brother of James Gunn – has reiterated that Vol. 3 is still going ahead, and remains optimistic despite the behind-the-scenes wrangling.

Speaking to Variety at the Captain Marvel premiere, actor Sean Gunn – who plays Kraglin in the Guardians films, and also stands in as Rocket Raccoon before the CGI magic takes over – spoke about the threequel. “I don’t know exactly how that’s all gonna work, but I feel like we are going to make the third movie,” he said. “I’m excited to make it, I think it’s a disservice to the fans if we didn’t make it and I know the people who worked on the Guardians movies are really a family, and we’re going to come together and make the best movie we can regardless of who’s in charge. I just have this feeling everything’s going to work itself out.”

Prior to his departure from Marvel, James Gunn had completed a Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 script, which is still expected to form the basis of the film. While fans have clamoured for Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi to take over, the filmmaker distanced himself from the rumors, saying that it would be “kind of awkward” to take over from Gunn. However, Adam McKay – behind comedies including Anchorman and Step Brothers, as well as The Big Short and Vice more recently – has been linked to Guardians 3 as a possible director. Expect updates on the MCU once the, ahem, dust settles on Avengers: Endgame.
