While the biggest recent news to come from the eternally busy Guillermo del Toro was the announcement about Pacific Rim 2 landing a green light and a release date, it would appear the crafty director is planning to sneak another project in before he returns to the world of jaegers and kaijus.

Talking with Collider, del Toro has revealed that while he’s currently busy putting haunted house horror Crimson Peak through its post-production paces, he’s looking to shoot a much smaller film in the gap between finishing that and kicking off shooting Pacific Rim’s sequel.

“Right away, in February or March I should start on another very small movie, black and white, really, really bizarre,” says del Toro. "We start pre-production on Pacific Rim 2 in August, and then I interrupt it briefly to go into the first of next year to do this strange little movie, and then I restart it and go all the way until we start shooting at the end of 2015 for release in 2017.”

The director was reluctant to divulge too much about the film, which is still bubbling away, but did admit that he’s already thinking about casting. “It’s a very small cast. I would love to have John Hurt, and there’s an actress that I have in mind that is not well known, but I’ve seen her in a short film. That’s all she’s really done, one feature and one short, but she has an incredibly interesting taste and I’m gonna try her out for the main role.” And the tone / genre? He’s not saying specifically, but will admit there’s “one great creature” in it. A new GDT project, that harks back to the likes of Pan’s Labyrinth? Colour us intrigued and ready to watch that...** Crimson Peak**, meanwhile, will be out here on October 16, 2015.
