It’s only a matter of days until Hellboy returns to the big screen for the first time since 2008 in a Neil Marshall-directed reboot – and in a last push before its release on Thursday, we’ve got a brand new look at the film. This latest trailer is short, sweary, and full of gore – a ‘sizzle reel’ teaser here to emphasise the R-rated (or, 15 in the UK) tone of this new iteration. Watch David Harbour splatter brains, Ian McShane swear like he’s Al Swearengen again, and Milla Jovovich survive dismemberment here:

We’ve long been promised that Marshall’s reboot would lean heavily into the horror elements of Mike Mignola’s comics – with the filmmaker telling Empire last year: “It was always a case of, ‘When in doubt, go back to the source material.’ Some of the stuff is pretty sick. More violent and more bloody. We weren’t making it with handcuffs on.” Considering all the face-ripping, limb-lopping, and eyeball-pulling action here, they’ve stayed true to those intentions. Here’s hoping it can also conjure some of the warmth of Guillermo del Toro’s Hellboy films, which had a love-lorn Big Red and Abe Sapien drinking beers and singing along to Barry Manilow.

Catch Hellboy in UK cinemas on Thursday 11 April.
