James Gunn Says Rocket Raccoon’s History Will Be Vital To GOTG 3

Rocket and Groot

We've had to wait a bit longer than originally planned for James Gunn's third Guardians Of The Galaxy entry, partly because Disney ditched him when unfortunate tweets surfaced. But he's been back on board for a while, and despite focusing on the Suicide Squad sequel since then, he still has his mind on Marvel's loveable rascals. During a Quarantine Watch Party viewing of the original, Gunn tweeted about something that we can expect from the third.

Rocket's past has been hinted at in the past, including the fact that even he's not entirely sure what he is. But the horrific experiments conducted on him and his dark past look set to become something even more significant than making him a compassionate character even as he blows stuff up.

And it makes sense that his story will get more layers – after all, the films have explored his unlikely family's pasts (well, maybe not Groot, but he is Groot), so it'll be good to let Sean Gunn (who provides the performance capture and on-set voice) and Bradley Cooper (Rocket's final voice) loose on some emotional scenes.

Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 is waiting to secure a release date, which will likely move back even further given Disney shifting the MCU schedule recently in response to the current crisis.
