He's usually to be found composing text messages on TV's Community, but Joel McHale is in line for a more dramatic role in supernatural thriller Beware The Night, in final talks to play the partner to Eric Bana's NYPD cop.

Scott Derrickson is set to direct the film - he's most recently made Sinister but is still probably most associated with The Exorcism Of Emily Rose. He'll need those exorcist skills here, because Bana's cop is being targeted by the devil, who has possessed a soldier (Harris). McHale, sadly, won't be providing comic relief but will be playing a tough and experienced cop alongside Bana, in a cast that includes Olivia Munn as Bana's wife and Edgar Ramirez as an improbably handsome Jesuit priest, who presumably provides some sort of spiritual advice.

Derrickson wrote the script with Paul Harris Boardman, and Jerry Bruckheimer's producing the whole thing. It's due to start shooting pretty darn soon now, since McHale is shooting rom-com Blended with Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore later this summer.
