They found success mining their own romantic (and medical) history for The Big Sick and followed that up with immigrant series Little America. Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon are next turning their attention to something a little stranger for a new film, teaming up with It director Andy Muschietti for The Doubtful Guest.
This new movie will adapt Edward Gorey's surreal illustrated book, published in 1957. The tome finds a weird, penguin-like creature appearing in a posh mansion house at the turn of the century (the 20th, century, to be clear). Its posh residents are unsure how to deal with the new "guest", but it somehow ends up staying for at least 17 years, despite being moody and mischievous, depending on how the mood strikes it. So... you know.... that old tale. The "penguin-like" creature aspect already makes us concerned this will be a nightmare for our Helen O'Hara.
Muschietti is on board to develop the film with producer/sister Barbara, while Nanjiani would star in the film – there's no word yet on whether the tale will be updated to modern day. And regardless, it'll have to wait at least until Muschietti is finished working on the Flash film for DC/Warners, which is now shooting. Sticking with the comicbook theme, Nanjiani will next be seen in Marvel's Eternals, while Gordon is adaptingBall And Chain for Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt.
