There have long been elements of horror in the films of Edgar Wright – especially his genre-riffing Cornetto Trilogy, from Shaun Of The Dead’s flesh-munching zombie apocalypse, to Hot Fuzz’s gory murders, and the sight of Nick Frost in a giant nappy for his ‘Don’t!’ trailer in Grindhouse. But he’s never gone for all-out chills before, until Last Night In Soho. His sixth fiction film (seventh film overall, after his upcoming rock-docThe Sparks Brothers) is a twisted tale in the nooks and crannies of London’s seedy Soho, telling the intertwined stories of Thomasin McKenzie’s contemporary fashionista Eloise, and her 1960s idol, singer Sandy, played by Anya Taylor-Joy. The long-awaited film (it was, like most upcoming movies, meant to arrive last year) has finally debuted its first trailer – take a look here.

The trailer itself gives little away – but does tease more of Eloise and Sandy’s connection. By which it seems that Eloise is Sandy whenever she mysteriously travels back in time – and that in her real life, she starts transforming herself into a more Sandy-like persona. But as their connection grows, there seems to be spooky, sinister consequences. It’s clear that Wright is relishing the chance to recreate ‘60s Soho (check out that massive Thunderball poster!) and there’s plenty of gorgeous neon-lit cinematography from Chung-hoon Chung here, who previously shot Park Chan-Wook’s Oldboy and The Handmaiden. And while this is going to psychological chills, it looks like there’ll be some more visceral scary moments in there too. Also among the cast here are Matt Smith, Shadow & Bone star Jessie Mei Li, and the late great Diana Rigg. Wright directs from a screenplay he co-wrote with Krysty Wilson-Cairns. Here's the stylish new poster:

There’s not too much longer to wait for this one – Last Night In Soho is currently expected to hit UK cinemas on 29 October, so expect an eerie Halloween treat. And for an earlier slice of Edgar, find The Sparks Brothers on the big screen this summer, from 30 July.
