While Luca Guadagnino has been more known for creating his own work (Call Me By Your Name, most notably_)_ rather than nabbing studio jobs, he's now the latest director that Universal believes can make its new version of Scarface work.
This is one that has been making its way through the studio halls for years, passed between filmmakers including Paul Attanasio, Jonathan Herman and, on the writing front at least, Joel and Ethan Coen most recently. Variety reports that Guadagnino is on board to develop the film with an eye to directing it, so chances are he'll do some script work or bring in his own writing team.
And it would, of course, be far from the first take on the story, with Scarface having come to the screen in 1932 and, most famously, Brian DePalma's 1983 take on an immigrant seizing his chance at the American dream through violent means.
Right now, Guadagnino is busy (at home, one assumes), guiding his HBO miniseries We Are Who We Are through post-production.
