Madonna has been hinting that she's at work on a new cinematic project for a while now, with cryptic messages that mentioned a collaboration with Juno's Diablo Cody. And now Universal has stepped up to back the film, a biopic of the singer and actor herself, which she'll also direct.

The film will tell the story of Madonna’s growth into a chart topping juggernaut and style icon with the staying power to become the all-time bestselling female artist — 335 million records worldwide — and the highest grossing solo touring numbers ever.

"I want to convey the incredible journey that life has taken me on as an artist, a musician, a dancer – a human being, trying to make her way in this world," Madonna says in a statement. "The focus of this film will always be music. Music has kept me going and art has kept me alive. There are so many untold and inspiring stories and who better to tell it than me. It’s essential to share the roller coaster ride of my life with my voice and vision." The film may end up titled Live To Tell after one of her songs.

Universal chairman Donna Langley and producer Amy Pascal are also on board, and the search will soon be on for someone to play Madonna in the movie. Gosh, we hope the music legend will let them use her music for the... oh, right.
