Given its massive popularity, years-long history and well-known branding, it's something of a surprise that no major company has successfully put fantasy tabletop card game Magic: The Gathering on screens. Netflix, Hasbro and MCU stalwarts Joe and Anthony Russo are looking to change that, teaming up for an animated series.
With the Russos as executive producers, head writers/show-runners Jose Molina and Henry Gilroy will oversee the creation of an all new storyline and expand on the stories of the Planeswalkers, which are Magic’s unique magic-wielding heroes and villains as they contend with stakes larger than any one world can hold. Yoriaki Mochizuki is on as supervising director.
"We have been huge fans and players of Magic: The Gathering for as long as it has been around," the Russos say in a statement. "So being able to help bring these stories to life through animation is a true passion project for us."
Given that the team to work on this one is only now assembled, there's no word yet on when it might hit screens, but given that fans have waited 25 years, another few months won't hurt.
