The Matrix

We've been seeing casting news breaks for the next Matrix movie for a while now, but one big question has remained: when will the film actually see the inside of cinemas. Now we know the answer, as Warner Bros. has announced it'll be out in May 2021.

Lana Wachowski is returning to the director's chair for the new movie, with Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss and Jada Pinkett Smith all back and new faces including Neil Patrick Harris, Jessica Henwick and Aquaman/Watchmen's Yahya Abdul-Mateen II.

But there is a downside to the news, especially for anyone who had been anticipating some actual progress on the live-action version of Akira. The studio has handed that film's slot to the new Matrix, and yanked the Manga adaptation off the schedule for now, most likely because of director Taika Waititi's busy schedule. The film had a production tax credit and looking to be going forward, but this signals yet more of a delay.

And the other slight issue? That release date puts the film on the same day as John Wick: Chapter 4. Neo vs. Wick? Keanu against Keanu? Someone will be blinking, we figure.

Elsewhere, we also might finally know when another long-gestating, director-swapping movie will head our way, as the standalone DC Flash movie starring Ezra Miller has been dated for July 2022. It's Andy Muschietti is currently on board to direct that one.
