Mortal Kombat Sequel In The Works

The critical reaction might have been more fatality than fanfare, but last year's Mortal Kombat managed to punch its way to enough success at the box office and on streaming for New Line to start work on a sequel.

Jeremy Slater, who recently served as the main writer on Marvel's 'Moon Knight', is aboard to write the script for the new Kombat, though that's just about all Deadline was able to learn for its report.

The 2021 movie, directed by Simon McQuoid, essentially served as a reboot, going right back to the original concept of a group of fighters with different abilities defending Earth against the threat from the warriors of Outworld. Cue clashes, slashes and a few finishing moves.

It certainly wasn't a flawless victory, but there's scope for more from the games to find their way to the screen – especially since the first movie never quite got around to the tournament aspect that is one of the arcade/console version's main points...
