Since monsters both big and small are still a hot property for studios to shape films around, and video games remain a source of inspiration, it was only a matter of time before Midway Games’ 1980s classic monster mash Rampage was targeted for cinematification.

Rampage follows three humans who are mutated into a giant ape (but not King Kong), a giant lizard (but not Godzilla) and a giant werewolf (not many giant werewolves have iconic status, so they didn’t have to worry so much about that one) and set about destroying city blocks while the military naturally tries to stop them. The object of the game was to cause as much destruction as possible. Fun!

While the title has been updated over the years, the classic 8-bit and arcade version is the one that likely still lingers in the minds of those of the right age to have enjoyed the destruction.

New Line has set Final Destination/Horrible Bosses producer John Rickard the task of finding a creative team to bring the movie version to life, presumably finding some relatable human story among all the madness…
