Oscars 2019: Green Book, Roma And More Win Big Prizes

Peter Farelly, Alfonso Cuaron at the 2019 Oscars

Eschewing the usual host, this year's Oscars ceremony ran swiftly and pretty much on track with some expected winners – until it didn't. You could have predicated Shallow taking Best Song and, after his run at other ceremonies, Rami Malek winning Best Actor for Bohemian Rhapsody.

But there were surprises to be found, including The Favourite's Olivia Colman as Best Actress, First Man snatching the VFX trophy, and, if we're honest, Green Book landing Best Picture. Some long injustices were corrected, such as Spike Lee finally going on stage to collect his Oscar as one of the writers of BlacKkKlansman. Alfonso Cuaron, who was the director of the night, and saw Roma triumph in several categories, also became the first director to win Best Cinematography, in a category thankfully not banished to the ad breaks.

Black Panther took three wins in costume, production design and score, and we were pleased to see Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse become the Best Animated Feature.

Elsewhere, there was the usual take no prisoners mic-cutting and swelling music cues to play off those in more technical categories who dared talk past 90 seconds. And even though the host-free show ended up avoiding a massive overrun, dare we hope for Amy Poehler, Tina Fey and Maya Rudolph to present again, or do anything they want next year? We'd also be happy with Melissa McCarthy and Brian Tyree Henry in their Favourite/Mary Poppins Returns get up. Just cut those annoying introductions for the Best Picture nominees through the show.

Here's the full list of winners.
