Paul Thomas Anderson's last film was 2017's Phantom Thread, and since then he's mostly been busy directing music videos for the likes of Haim and being thanked by other filmmakers in the credits of their work. Yet he has also been developing his next project, and is now close to starting production on it, with a few details emerging.
Though there is no title yet, The Hollywood Reporter has learned that it'll be set in a high school in the 1970s and follow a student who who is also a successful child actor. According to the trade mag's sources, it'll either feature an ensemble or several narratives that intersect and Anderson has already begun the casting process.
A first mention of the film popped up when it landed on a list of movies that are scoring tax credits from the California Film Commission, which indicates he'll be back in his LA milieu after a trip to London for Thread. Anderson will have the cameras rolling in February, so there's a good chance his next film will be ready by the time awards season kicks in next year.
