Given the continuing controversies surrounding Bryan Singer – including his firing from Bohemian Rhapsody and the past misconduct allegations that follow him despite his denials – it was somewhat surprising that the director scored a job making a Red Sonja film for Millennium Films. Now, however, word arrives that the project has apparently been put back into development limbo.
According to Deadline, the film is not on the company's slate and that it won't appear for sale at the European Film Market as part of this year's Berlin Film Festival. Singer has not, at the time of writing, been formally removed, but this appears to be a way of getting out of the deal with him without actually parting ways.
Red Sonja, who first cropped up in Roy Thomas' Conan comics for Marvel (set in a similar world to Robert E. Howard's barbarian), has been on Millennium's To Do list for more than a decade. The project has burned through potential stars (Amber Heard and Rose McGowan among them), directors (Robert Rodriguez most famously) and writers as it has stomped through development hell. This new incarnation was supposed to kick off filming in Bulgaria this year, but that's off the table for now. And with no cast hired, it looks like the company will have to wait even longer to make it happen.
