A couple of months ago, rumours about Robert Rodriguez being offered the job of directing 20th Century Fox’ X-Men spin-off Deadpool flared up again, with most studio types refusing to commit to any solid confirmation. But now, according to the LA Times, it would seem that the process has moved on a little, with Rodriguez quietly starting to work on a deal to make the movie.
If the idea of Rodriguez taking on the Merc With A Mouth is appealing, don’t go getting too excited just yet. The talks are at a very early stage, like two tigers tentatively trying to figure out if they want to mate, dancing around each other and sniffing the air. And before that visual gets too graphic, we’ll move on by saying that as it stands, the only definite info is that the director’s seen and likes the latest script, written by Zombieland’s Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. According to the Times’ sources, however, the discussions between Rodriguez and Fox have moved beyond casual chats and started getting into the nitty gritty of hammering out who would want what in terms of budget, profit points and other such bland moviemaking business arrangements.
Either way, the schedule for Deadpool will have to wait a while, since Rodriguez is making a new Spy Kids film and the mutant film’s assumed star, Ryan Reynolds, has only just finished work on Green Lantern and will likely shoot comedy **The Change-Up **before anything else.
We'd have to doubt **Deadpool **can be ready for a 2011 release by this point, but at least this means we may actually see it at some point in the future.
