They might both be part of the MCU now, but Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law have no special powers in real life to affect the time stream. Warner Bros. has decided to punt the still-in-development third Sherlock Holmes film a further year later for release, scheduling it for December 2021.
Both Downey Jr. and Law are confirmed to return for this one, and while Guy Ritchie directed the first two, his name was missing from the most recent announcement. Still, given the release date shift, there's space for him to potentially return.
Not much is known about the story either – Narcos' Chris Brancato was the most recent person working on the script, though Law has said it'll dig into the detecting duo meeting up again after a few years apart, a little like the audience re-establishing their relationship to the characters after 2011's Game Of Shadows. And 2021 would mark 10 years since that film, so perhaps, like Sony, Warners is looking to play the decade anniversary card.
As for that 22 December release date, as Deadline remarks, that'll put the new film up against musical adaptation Wicked, Sony's Hotel Transylvania 4, and something new from Disney. Good luck...
