Here’s one to file alongside Pokemon: Detective Pikachu in the ‘This Film Is Actually Happening’ folder – a semi-live-action Sonic the Hedgehog movie is set to arrive around this time next year. Don’t believe us? Well, here’s the first poster to prove that Sega’s iconic blue hedgehog is indeed warming up, ready to zoom onto the big screen in 2019.

Sonic The Hedgehog

Let’s address the elephant in the room: even from silhouette along, this Sonic is almost disconcertingly muscly and has clearly not been skipping leg day in the gym. It looks like we’ll be set for a moderately realistic image of what Sonic would look like (read: furry and vaguely human, not remotely hedgehog-like), just as Detective Pikachu re-imagined the designs of several Pokemon. And there’s wordplay here in the nod that Sonic comes from ‘the producer of The Fast And The Furious’, with the blue guy known for his own speedy boosts. Ben Schwartz is voicing Sonic here, with Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik, and James Marsden playing Tom Wachowski – here’s the synopsis: “A cop in rural town of Green Hills will help Sonic escape from the government who is looking to capture him.”

With Sonic The Hedgehog’s poster now out there, a trailer could also be on the horizon – set up a Twitter notification for ‘Sonic legs’ to keep up-to-date on any developments. The film will be running at high speed towards UK cinemas, collecting rings, avoiding spikes and liberating small fluffy creatures for a 26 December 2019 release.
