In this time of internet forgeries, fake news, and, er, untrustworthy politicians, there’s one man out here telling the truth – and his name is J. Jonah Jameson. With his website TheDailyBugle.net, this highly respectable journalist is exposing the widely-propagated lie that New York's 'Spider-Man' is some kind of friendly neighbourhood superhero – when, in fact, he’s a menace to society and an “evil psychopath”. Of course, all of the above is fake news – except for the bit about the Daily Bugle being an actual website now, because the real news here is that Sony has launched a Bugle site to support the digital release of Spider-Man: Far From Home (in the US, that is – UK fans have a little longer to wait to watch it at home). In a treat for fans, the site includes a little extra footage of – SPOILER WARNING, although it seems that the spoiler ban on this has now lifted considering it's being used in promotional materials – JK Simmons, back as the character he first played across Sam Raimi’s Spidey trilogy between 2002 and 2007. His new incarnation of Jameson (this isn’t the same JJJ from those flicks) is a right-wing crackpot, tying nicely into Far From Home’s subtext around the malleability of the truth in the digital era. Elsewhere on the Daily Bugle page is a nice in-jokey article about the mysterious ‘Night Monkey’ hero spotted around Europe.
Hopefully we’ll be seeing more of Simmons as J Jonah Jameson in future Spider-Man movies – even if those Spider-Man movies don’t take place in the MCU. Spider-Man: Far From Home will arrive on digital in the UK on 25 October, followed by a DVD and Blu-ray release on 11 November.
