Because Sony and Marvel clearly didn't make enough dosh from Spider-Man: No Way Home (current earnings $1.9 billion at the global box office), the companies have decided to A) delight fans and B) celebrate both 60 years of Spidey as a comicbook character and 20 years of the original Spider-Man movie by re-releasing the latest film as an extended, "The More Fun Stuff Version".
No Way Home, directed by Jon Watts, saw Peter (Tom Holland) scrambling to fix the situation after his secret identity is revealed and he's labelled a criminal framed for killing Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal) at the end of Far From Home.
In his desperation, he turns to Dr. Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), a but a spell to wipe the world's memory of Peter's Spidey connection goes wonky, introducing villains from different multiverse versions of Spider-Man into Peter's world. Thankfully, he gets an assist from fellow Peter Parkers played by Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield.
Sony's announcement of the new version doesn't specify what the new version will add, but rumours are already out there of 15 extra minutes of footage, comprised of deleted and extended scenes.
The movie will return to cinemas on 2 September in the States and Canada (Labor Day weekend in the US), and we're promised more country announcements soon.
