Poor old Peter Parker. Just minutes after being un-dusted by Hulk in Avengers: Endgame, having spent five years as a literal pile of ash, he witnessed his mentor Tony Stark die right in front of him. That’s a lot for any teenager to go through – and it places even greater responsibility on him in Spider-Man: Far From Home. The Homecoming sequel finds the friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man leaving Queens for a much-needed holiday, off on a jaunt round Europe with his school friends. But when a bunch of Elemental creatures start popping up and attacking cities, and with the Avengers scattered to the wind, Spidey is the one called upon by Nick Fury to sort it all out. And when Fury comes calling, he really does mean business.
“The relationship between Peter and Tony is admiration. The relationship between Peter and Nick Fury is more fear,” Tom Holland tells Empire in the new Spider-Man: Far From Home issue, on sale from Thursday 16 May. “I think he’s a little bit terrified of him. When he shows up, it’s no joke. He knows this isn’t some silly mission. He knows the stakes are real and it’s time to step up.”
Thankfully he’s not alone. Jake Gyllenhaal’s Mysterio pops up to battle the Elementals alongside our favourite wall-crawler in a major flip from the comics, where Quentin Beck has always been depicted as a villain. “The idea of Mysterio as a hero was something we had never explored before,” says director Jon Watts. “Having the power of Marvel behind you means that you can make those crazy swaps.”
