It's a big day for news about Disney's streaming service, the Mouse House's entry into the digital TV realm. We now know that it'll be called Disney+ and that a second Star Wars live-action series is in the works. Diego Luna will reprise the role of Cassian Andor for an untitled show set before the events of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
Few other details were revealed about the show, which will be set during the formative years of the Rebellion and is described as a spy thriller filled with espionage and daring missions to restore hope to a galaxy in the grip of a ruthless Empire. "Going back to the Star Wars universe is very special for me," Luna says. "I have so many memories of the great work we did together and the relationships I made throughout the journey. We have a fantastic adventure ahead of us, and this new exciting format will give us the chance to explore this character more deeply."
There's no word on when the show might hit the service, but it'll follow The Mandalorian, which is already shooting. It's somewhat surprising that Disney would go back to the well of a movie that was a chaotic production requiring re-tooling. Yet it still ended up grossing more than a billion dollars and Andor was a popular character, so the reasoning seems sound. Plus we can hope for more snarktastic droid disaffection from Alan Tudyk's K-2SO, depending, of course, on whether the timeline syncs up.
In related streaming service news, the company confirmed that the Marvel movie team is developing a limited series about Tom Hiddleston's Loki.
