Among all the news around Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker that came at the end of last week, J.J. Abrams kept talking up Episode IX as the final mainline Star Wars film. With the Skywalker saga wrapping up for good (or at least for now), the galaxy far, far away will be expanding into different places and periods in the future – and among those new trilogies from Rian Johnson and Game Of Thrones show runners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, it sounds like a Knights Of The Old Republic adaptation could be in the works at a very early stage.
In an interview with MTV at Star Wars Celebration, LucasFilm president Kathleen Kennedy was asked directly about the fan-favorite video games and whether they’ll be coming to the screen. And while it sounds like it’s very much in the ether for now, Kennedy responded that something on those lines is being worked on. “You know, we talk about [Old Republic] all the time,” she said. “Yes, we are developing something to look at. Right now, I have no idea where things might fall, but we have to be careful that there is a cadence to Star Wars that doesn’t start to feel like too much.”
On that topic of pacing the release of Star Wars movies and not wearing out audiences with them, Kennedy added: “We don’t have a crystal ball. We tried a little bit with Solo to see if we could do two movies year, whether or not there was really an opportunity for that, and we felt that’s not going to work. So we back off of that a little bit. But it doesn’t mean we don’t think about lots of different stories, because that’s the exciting thing about this universe.”
It’s still currently unconfirmed when or where Johnson and Benioff and Weiss’ trilogies will be set, Johnson has previously confirmed that his films won’t be Knights Of The Old Republic-centric. The storyline of the games takes place 4000 years before the event of the main saga, exploring a conflict between Sith Lord Darth Malak and the Jedi Order, several millennia before the Galactic Empire is forged.
In the meantime, Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker comes to cinemas this December, while streaming series The Mandalorian is coming to Disney+ in November.
