Given that she’s recently worked on a Julian Fellowes-penned adaptation of** Romeo And Juliet**, you might think Hailee Steinfeld would have had enough of doomed romance for a while. But it would seem she’s a glutton for punishment, signing on to star in a new comedy called Why We Broke Up.
Though the film – adapted by Lemony Snicket author Daniel Handler from his book – doesn’t end with a couple committing suicide because their families are in constant conflict, it starts at the end of a relationship, with high-schooler Min (Steinfeld then) dropping a box off at the house of her former beau, Ed. Filled with seemingly random trinkets including two bottle caps, a movie ticket, a folded note, a box of matches, a protractor, books, a toy truck, a pair of ugly earrings and a comb from a motel room, the box and its accompanying letter tell the story of their whirlwind courtship and why it fractured.
Beth McCarthy-Miller, a veteran of TV shows such as 30 Rock and Saturday Night Live, is set to direct, making this the second film gig she’s landed after winning the job of shooting Tammy with Melissa McCarthy.
Steinfeld, who scored an Oscar nomination for True Grit, has Romeo And Juliet set to arrive on February 14 next year and is currently at work on Ender’s Game.
