Stephen King’s dark-hued fable 1922 is being adapted by Netflix with Thomas Jane and Molly Parker in the lead roles. The morality tale, a 131-page novella published as part of King’s 2010 collection Full Dark, No Stars, is the second adaption of the writer’s work to go in production at Netflix after suspense tale Gerald's Game.
The former Punisher will be doing violence again in this one as Nebraska landowner Wilfred James, whose wife (Parker) is looking to sell adjoining land and move to the city. The murderous outcome of their fallout comes when James – the story’s unreliable narrator – unravels completely.
This terrible deed sparks torments beyond his (but, crucially, not Stephen King’s) darkest imaginings. He's plagued by rats when he buries his wife’s body, and soon comes to believe he’s being haunted from beyond the grave.
Australian filmmaker Zak Hilditch, best known for 2013 apocalyptic thriller These Final Hours, is writing and directing this one. Dylan Schmid, Kaitlyn Bernard, Brian d’Arcy James and Minority Report’s Neal McDonough round out the cast.
