Way back when, artist and filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky decided he was going to adapt Frank Herbert's Dune. Obviously, that didn't come to fruition (as anyone who has seen documentary Jodorowsky's Dune knows in fascinating detail), but his collaboration with iconic creative talent Jean Giraud, aka Moebius on designs for the movie didn't go to waste – their creative partnership gave life to a graphic novel called The Incal, which itself grew into a whole series of titles. Now, in an exciting development, Jodorowsky has anointed Taika Waititi as the man with the right attitude to bring it to screens.
And because he's not already busy with a variety of projects, Waititi naturally agreed. "The films and graphic novels of Alejandro Jodorowsky have influenced me and so many others for so long,” said Waititi. “I was stunned to be given the opportunity to bring his iconic characters to life and I am grateful to Alejandro, Fabrice and everyone at [Incal publishers] Humanoids for trusting me to do so."
Even more exciting is the news that this will see Waititi reunite with What We Do In The Shadows collaborator Jemaine Clement to write the script alongside Peter Warren. The story takes place in a dystopian sci-fi city and follows the story of private investigator John Difool, as he navigates a story that includes powerful crystals, aliens, and conspiracies.
In addition to everything else, Waititi has his return to the MCU, Thor: Love And Thunder and documentary adaptation Next Goal Wins out next year.
