It's been a rough few years for writer/director Neill Blomkamp, who since Chappie has been attached to not one, but two continuations of cult sci-fi franchises in his plans to make a new Alien movie and directing RoboCop Returns. One was effectively scuppered by Ridley Scott and he's no longer on board the other. At least, though, we know that's because he's been developing a new, original film, and has Taylor Kitsch lined up to star in Inferno.

This new blend of humans and aliens will see Kitsch as a cop who is dispatched to investigate what he at first thinks is an ordinary murder in the New Mexico desert. But when the FBI shows up at the crime scene, he suspects there are bigger issues at play. And he's right! The lawman is soon dealing with a humanoid beast, one that will stop at nothing to slaughter the one witness to the crime.

"I am very excited to be getting behind the camera and making Inferno with AGC [Studios, which is backing the movie]," says Blomkamp. "The film is filled with themes and concepts that I find deeply fascinating, I feel lucky to be shooting it."

Blomkamp should be shooting this one early next year. The director – who has been keeping busy between those frustrating other films by producing shorts and other videos – might want to think about a new title for this latest project. Inferno has been used for various movies, including a 1980 Dario Argento thriller and Ron Howard's 2016 Dan Brown adaptation.
