Among the few bright sparks in the pandemic we're all suffering through is efforts to reunite the cast and crew of classic movies to benefit charities. The latest saw the likes of Steven Spielberg, Sean Astin, Josh Brolin and more gathered (remotely) to celebrate The Goonies. But the downside to the livestream? Spielberg pouring cold water on the idea of a sequel for now.

Josh Gad hosted the Zoom-powered livestream, which featured those listed above plus Corey Feldman, Jeff Cohen, Ke Huy Quan, Martha Plimpton, Kerri Green, writer Chris Columbus and director Richard Donner.

"Chris [Columbus], Dick [Donner] and I — and Lauren [Shuler Donner] — have had a lot of conversations about it," Spielberg said. "Every couple of years we come up with an idea but then it doesn’t hold water." Boo! Get his non-union Mexican equivalent on the phone! He won't let us down. "Until we do, people are just going to have to look at this livestream a hundred times," Spielberg added. But at least they're thinking about it? There's still hope!

Still, Richard Donner jokingly piped up with another wrinkle: "How are you going to find seven miserable kids like this again that are new and fresh?"

Reuniting the full main cast for any follow-up would be a nightmare of busy schedules, but we're never saying die. Watch the full livestream below.

Update! Adam F. Goldberg, the creator of US TV sitcom The Goldbergs, has been writing his own version of the sequel, and had a meeting all set with Donner. He promises it'll happen...
