Russo Brothers – Avatar / Endgame

Avengers: Endgame’s ascent to overtake Avatar as the #1 box office movie of all time has been interpreted by most as a fierce competition – but it appears to be all love at the top. After the MCU behemoth beat James Cameron’s 2009 sci-fi spectacular over the weekend, the Avatar director shared a customary congratulations to Marvel for their immense success – and now the Russo Brothers have responded to that message with their own personal thank-you to Cameron. It’s a response to a response – to which we, of course, await the response to the response to the response.

It’s a sweet message from the Russos, who pay tribute to all the ‘holy shit’ spectacles Cameron has brought to the screen over the years – from The Terminator and Aliens, to Titanic and Avatar. “To @JimCameron – you're a monumental reason why we fell in love with film in the first place,” they write. “Thank you for always inspiring us and opening the world’s eyes to what’s possible. We can’t wait to see where you take us next…”

The next place Cameron will be taking us is, of course, the oceans of Pandora – with Avatar 2 coming to chase that #1 spot in December 2021. In his message to the Russos and Marvel, Cameron wrote: “I see you Marvel. Congratulations to Avengers: Endgame on becoming the new box-office king.” The current box office tally for Endgame comes in at $2.79 billion – just ahead of Avatar’s former record figure, $2.789 billion. Time will tell how the Na’vi will fight back in a few year’s time.
