We've seen Tom Hanks struggle with adversity in the past, but after watching him as the kindly Fred Rogers in A Beautiful Day In The Neighbourhood, it's almost jarring to see him promising to "bring Hell Down From On High" in the new trailer for World War II naval drama Greyhound.
Not, as the title might suggest, a tale set on one of those buses that traverse the States, nor something about dogs, Greyhound is based on a true story, and also CS Forester's novel The Good Shepherd, which Hanks himself adapted into a script.
Aaron Schneider's in the director's chair for the movie, which is set in the early days of the conflict. An international convoy of 37 Allied ships, led by captain Ernest Krause (Hanks) in his first command of a US destroyer, crosses the treacherous North Atlantic while hotly pursued by wolf packs of Nazi U-boats. He takes out one easily enough, but that's just the start of the battle – one where he and his convoy will not enjoy the protection of air support...
Stephen Graham, Rob Morgan and Elisabeth Shue are also in the cast for the film, which sails into UK cinemas this year. It had been intended for 8 May, but was recently pushed to 12 June in the US, so may well be on the move over here too.
