Though it already boasts a solid cast, World War II espionage-meets-sports drama The Catcher Was A Spy has added some new names. Tom Wilkinson, Connie Nielsen and Shea Whigham have all signed on.
The Sessions' Ben Lewin is directing a script written by Saving Private Ryan's Robert Rodat. Here, he adapts Nicholas Dawidoff's 1994 non-fiction bestseller about Moe Berg (Paul Rudd), an accomplished college graduate who spoke nine languages and spent 15 years as a player on baseball teams including the Chicago White Sox. What his teammates didn't know was that his sports career was a cover for his life as a top secret spy for America's pre-CIA intelligence agency the OSS, and he helped the US win the arms race against Germany.
Mark Strong joined the cast recently to play scientist Werner Heisenberg, whose professional circles Moe had to infiltrate to decide if he was a true supporter of the Nazi efforts to build an atomic weapon and take him out if so.
We don't yet know what roles Wilkinson, Nielsen and Whigham are taking, but they'll be part of an ensemble that already includes Guy Pearce, Jeff Daniels, Sienna Miller and Paul Giamatti.
Sessions is shooting the film now, but it has yet to announce a release date.
