Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Star Wars Episode VIII are, of course, immediately incoming. But there's also the small matter of Chris Miller and Phil Lord's Han Solo standalone spin-off. The casting process to find a young Solo to fill Harrison Ford's considerable shoes has been extensive, with thousands of hopefuls either attending auditions or sending in tapes. But we're down to the last few now, with reports coming in that the names in final contention are Alden Ehrenreich, Jack Reynor and Taron Egerton.

Yes, this is one of those "casting shortlist" stories which may or may not have any bearing on the final announcement. But still, it's intriguing.

Ehrenreich has recently been stealing scenes as the laconic cowboy actor Hobie Doyle in the Coen Brothers' Hail, Caesar!.

Jack Reynor made his biggest impression to date as the stoically hunky Shane in Transformers: Age Of Extinction.

And Egerton we know from Kingsman: The Secret Service and Eddie The Eagle. From Eddie Edwards to Han Solo. That's versatility.

There are a couple of other names in the mix too - specifically Miles Teller and Ansel Elgort - but THR's report makes it sound as if they're now out of the running.

Producer Kathleen Kennedy had previously hinted that the movie might find Han Solo in his late teens, but according to screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan it'll be set, at most, a decade before Star Wars. That would make this, if you will, the Han Solo of the old Brian Daley novels like Han Solo At Stars' End and Han Solo's Revenge. Which means he's really not far off being 1977 Harrison Ford at all. Can any of the names mentioned so far carry off a convincing job? Let us know on the social medias.

Ford himself, if you somehow missed it, is conversely not giving up the role of Indiana Jones, and will be returning for a fifth movie in the adventurous archeological franchise in 2019. Our next date with Star Wars is Rogue One, which is out in the UK on December 16.
