A few years ago, when Game Of Thrones came to an end, Kit Harington finally got to chop off his long, curly Jon Snow locks, and put down the heavy fur coat for good. Now, on the hottest day of the year, it looks like he might be growing his hair back out again and donning the Northern Westerosi furs once more – because The Hollywood Reporter claims that HBO is in early development on a Game Of Thrones spin-off series that’s Jon Snow-centric, set after the events of the main show.
Since Thrones ended, multiple spin-offs have been in the works – including Targaryen series House Of The Dragon, which finally debuts this August. But while that show is set a few hundred years before the events of the original series, and other proposed offshoots would delve into other areas of the fantasy world’s expansive history, mythos, and continents, the Jon Snow series would mark Thrones’ first official ‘sequel’ show. SPOILERS FOLLOW for the Game Of Thrones finale. In the final episode of the main series, Snow survived the scorching of King’s Landing, was sentenced to return to Night’s Watch, and ultimately ventured north of the Wall with the Wildlings while his younger brother Bran was crowned King Of The Six Kingdoms (his sister Sansa became Queen In The North, its own independent kingdom). The series would theoretically pick up Jon’s life beyond the Wall – though no details have yet been confirmed.
If the show is picked up for a season order, Harington is reportedly attached to reprise his role. It’s unknown if original author George RR Martin (who hasn’t yet written his own ending for the A Song Of Ice And Fire novels, which may differ to the one we saw in the show) would be involved. Martin is a co-creator and executive producer on House Of The Dragon, which is based on his Targaryen history book Fire & Blood. Other Thrones spin-offs in development include seafaring adventures 10,000 Ships and Sea Snake, plus the Dunk & Egg series, and a handful of animated projects.
Will the Jon Snow series make it into production? Is there a compelling story for where the man now also know as Aegon Targaryen goes next? Could the likes of Arya, Sansa, Bran, and Brienne make appearances? We know nothing.
